Teacher Tuesday: Michele Torrecilla

We asked each of our teachers a few questions to get to know them better!

Meet Michele Torrecilla!

When did yoga first become a part of your life?

I first started yoga while in graduate school! But it wasn't many years later when I fell and suffered an injury to my tailbone that I succumbed to trying yoga again at my local gym. I was not happy that I could not do my normal cardio routine. I think I thought it would be temporary. But this time, many years older and wiser, I felt differently about yoga. I fell in love and discovered yoga was so much more than just a physical practice.

When did you begin teaching? What made you decide to progress from student to teacher?

When I began practicing regularly I realized how healing the practice was, not only physically (for my tailbone injury) but also mentally and emotionally. I truly felt it was healing. And having studied to become a psychotherapist but never pursuing an actual career, I realized that I could help others through yoga. I found a teacher that I loved and pursued training with her.

What is your personal practice and practice that you teach?

I practice a vinyasa style yoga daily and teach vinyasa, as well as restorative. Restorative yoga has slowly but surely become my favorite style to teach. But as a wannabe preschool teacher (I love kids) I realized that I also love teaching beginners. Old and young. Anyone willing to courageously step onto a mat!

If you could be any animal in the world, what would it be and why?

I love birds! I love listening to them sing in the morning. I love the idea of them flying south for the winter and returning home in the spring. I love the theme of remembering our own wings to fly!

What is your favorite quote?

It would be the rumi quote about birds' wings.

You were born with potential.

You were born with goodness and trust. You were born with ideals and dreams. You were born with greatness.

You were born with wings.

You are not meant for crawling, so don't.

You have wings.

Learn to use them and fly.”

When to practice with you at the owl?
