Meet Maria LaNave-Johnson, Dance + Yoga Teacher, and Thai Bodywork Practitioner.
Maria LaNave-Johnson has been committed to movement health and expression (both personally and professionally) for over 30 years. As a dance performer and educator, her experience ranges from West African dance to Ballroom dance, with her current instructional focus on wedding dance choreography and Cuban Salsa.
Licensed as a massage therapist in 1988, she practiced Swedish massage for 25 years , but is now enthusiastically devoted to Thai Yoga Bodywork.
She loves the energy at Grey Owl, and is excited to share her gifts with this heart expanding community.
We asked each of our teachers a few questions to get to know them better ...
What/who inspires you?
Being in nature, music that makes me want to dance, free-spirited/open- minded/socially conscious/lovers of the world in their own unique way, people that rise above and thrive against the odds, children
What book has influenced your life the most?
“I Have Spoken”, because of where and when I read and re-read it.
Favorite and least favorite posture, and why?
Least favorite: Crescent moon pose. It hurts my neck, and my ego won’t back off, pushing me to bend more!!
Favorite: Pidgeon. It feels so good, I could relax there for days and do so much opening, and there are so many ways to develop it from very simple to super bendy.
If you could visit anywhere in the world you’ve never been, where would you go?
The desert in New Mexico to contemplate the next place I really wanted to go.
What superpower do you wish you possessed?
Really, I just want to fly.
What are your offerings at Grey Owl?
I offer Thai Yoga Bodywork on Saturdays and Sundays.
As well as Cuban Salsa Dancing workshops and classes.
